Snickers Rice Krispie Treats

Snickers has held the top spot as one of my all-time favorite candy bars for as long as I can remember. The combo of milk chocolate, chewy nougat, gooey caramel, and salty roasted peanuts is unbeatable. As part of my ongoing “Can It Krispie?” series over on Instagram, where I take classic desserts and flavor combinations and see if they can hold their own as marshmallow treats, I knew I could not just settle for basic peanut butter rice krispies.

I wanted to actually mirror a Snickers bar from top to bottom. Instead of merely hinting at the flavor profile, we are building full layers: a peanut-butter-spiked marshmallow crispy rice layer as our nougat foundation, a rich melted caramel blanket tossed with chopped peanuts, and a glossy peanut butter chocolate topping finished with a final peanut crunch and flaky sea salt. It has that signature chewy pull, salty-sweet balance, and crisp bite that will make you wonder why you ever settled for plain cereal squares.

Why You Will Love These Layered Candy Bar Treats

  • True Candy Bar Layers: Designed to look and bite like an actual Snickers bar, with distinct marshmallow, caramel peanut, and chocolate levels.
  • Sweet and Salty Perfection: Creamy peanut butter, buttery caramel, rich chocolate, and flaky sea salt balance every single mouthful.
  • Completely No-Bake: Decadent, show-stopping dessert squares made right on the stovetop and in the microwave without turning on the oven.
  • Easy Party Finger Food: Sturdy enough to slice into tidy squares that hold up beautifully at room temperature.

How to Make Snickers Rice Krispie Treats

Start by prepping your 8×8 pan with parchment paper so your finished bars easily lift out in one solid slab later. In a large mixing bowl, toss your crispy rice cereal with an extra handful of whole mini marshmallows to create those signature gooey bakery pockets.

Place a saucepan over low heat and melt the butter. Add the marshmallows and stir continuously until they break down into a smooth, fluffy cloud. Once melted, turn off the heat and stir in the peanut butter and vanilla bean paste until completely silky and incorporated. Pour this warm mixture directly over the rice cereal in your bowl, tossing quickly with a greased spatula until every piece is evenly coated. Transfer into your lined 8×8 pan and press into a firm, even base layer.

Next, make the caramel center. In a clean saucepan over medium-low heat, gently melt down the unwrapped caramels together with the heavy cream, stirring continuously so the sauce turns silky and does not scorch. Once smooth, fold in half of your chopped peanuts. Pour the warm caramel mixture directly over the cereal layer and smooth it out toward the edges.

For the chocolate topping, add your chocolate chips, peanut butter, and coconut oil to a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second bursts, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate is glossy and completely melted. Pour the melted chocolate evenly over the caramel layer, smoothing it out with an offset spatula. Immediately scatter the remaining chopped peanuts across the top and finish with a sprinkle of flaky sea salt. Let the pan sit at room temperature until the caramel and chocolate have fully set before slicing into squares.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Melt caramel slowly over gentle heat: Caramels melt best over medium-low heat with heavy cream. Keeping the heat low prevents the caramel from becoming brittle once cooled.
  • Do not compact the bottom layer too hard: Use light, steady pressure when pressing the rice krispie base into your 8×8 pan so the bottom stays wonderfully chewy instead of turning rock hard.
  • Use coconut oil in the chocolate melt: A tiny splash of coconut oil keeps the melted chocolate smooth and ensures the top shell slices cleanly without cracking completely apart.
  • Let the layers set at room temperature: Letting the treats firm up on the counter gives you the best chew, keeping the caramel gooey and soft.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

How should I store these leftover treats? Store cut bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 to 5 days. Avoid storing them in the refrigerator, since the cold air hardens both the caramel and marshmallow layers.

Can I make these gluten-free? Yes, just make sure to double-check that your crispy rice cereal and store-bought caramel candies are certified gluten-free.

Can I use chunky peanut butter instead of smooth? Smooth peanut butter blends best into the warm marshmallow and chocolate layers, but chunky peanut butter works just fine if you love extra nutty texture!
