italian pizza pinwheels

I love a good Italian hoagie (or, depending where you live, an Italian sub). Growing up, we’d get Italian hoagies and take them to the beach or the pool, so this time of year always makes me crave them. I have a recipe for an Italian hoagie chopped salad that’s great for the summer, but wanted to create something a bit more indulgent (and cheesier). That’s how these Italian hoagie pizza pinwheels came to be!

These take all the flavor of pizza and an Italian hoagie and combine them into one delicious dish. As a bonus, these are perfect little roll ups that you can easily grab and enjoy (or make for a group)! To really drive home the hoagie flavor, they’re finished in a red wine vinaigrette that brings all the flavors together and is so so yummy. Hope you love them as much as we did!

Making Italian hoagie pizza pinwheels

This recipe is best made in a square baking dish (8×8 or 9×9), as it will yield 12 pinwheels which will fit comfortably in there. Other than that, you’ll just need a mixing bowl, cutting board, and some utensils to create these. To make these, you’ll first mix up the ingredients for the pizza dough and roll it out into a rectangle on a well-floured surface. If you’re using a rolling pin, make sure to flour that well too – it’s a very sticky dough due to the moisture content!

To make these, you’ll need:

Dough:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup nonfat greek yogurt (I use Fage 0%)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 egg

For the filling you’ll need:

  • 1 cup Turkey pepperoni, chopped
  • 6 slices lean ham, chopped
  • 1/2 c banana peppers, chopped
  • 1/3 c red onion, chopped
  • 1.5 cup fat free mozzarella, shredded

First, mix all of your dough ingredients, ideally using a stand mixer + dough hook (or use a wooden spoon, but the dough is sticky). Flour a surface well (I use a silicone baking mat) and roll the rough out into a rectangle (roughly 12×16 inches. In another small bowl, combine filling ingredients (minus cheese(, then spread over the dough, leaving about an inch uncovered on the long edge thats further from you. Cover with cheese.

Starting at the long edge that is closest to you, carefully begin to roll the dough up and away from you toward the uncovered edge. Roll it all the way up, leaving the seam side down to create a secure seal. Cut into 12 pinwheels and arrange in a well-sprayed baking dish. Pro tip – cut your pinwheels with some dental floss so you don’t to smush your swirls! Just cut a long piece of floss, shimmy it under the roll, then bring the ends together and pull them across each other to easily cut. Spray tops with cooking spray and bake at 375 for 25-30 minutes, until nicely golden brown. Remove from the oven and finish with some vinaigrette right before eating and enjoy! Store pinwheels and dressing separately in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Simple Italian Vinaigrette

The finishing touch on these pinwheels is an easy Italian vinaigrette. It’s inspired by the oil/vinegar combo that’s a hallmark of many good Italian sandwiches, and it gives the pinwheels a great zing. I just drizzle a little dressing over the pinwheels right before eating so they don’t get soggy, but otherwise just serve it on the side.

To make the dressing, you’ll need:

  • 3 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1/3 cup Red wine vinegar
  • 1 Tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 Tsp powdered confectioners sugar or sugar replacement
  • Salt pepper to taste

Just combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl and whisk together. Voila!
