high protein hot chocolate

Once the temps drop outside, I looove a good hot chocolate. I need it to be thick, rich, creamy, and topped with marshmallows or whipped cream (no exceptions!). However, store-bought hot chocolate mixes are often loaded with sugar, preservatives, and have little to no nutritional value. While I’m all for a treat, I decided to try to make a hot chocolate that is a bit better for you – less sugar, more good stuff. That’s how this high protein hot chocolate was born, and it is my new obsession! It’s creamy and decadent, but packs around 25g of protein, so it helps me stay fuller longer. It’s extra tasty topped with some homemade marshmallows – enjoy!

Making High Protein Hot Chocolate

Making your own cocoa couldn’t be easier- and you can totally make the mix in a big batch ahead of time and portion it out as you want it. However, it only takes about 5 min to make either way, so you can also whip it up on the fly. To make it, you’ll want to start with a milk base – to make this high in protein, I use Fairlife milk which has about 13g of protein per cup. You can also use a plant-based milk if you’re avoiding dairy though.

Put your milk in a small saucepan and add cocoa powder, sweetener (I use monk fruit sweetener to not add calories, but you can use maple syrup, honey, regular sugar, etc and adjust to your preference), protein powder (I use unflavored collagen peptides), and vanilla and whisk it all together. Heat it all up so that everything melds together, and then pour into your mug of choice. Top with marshmallows or whipped cream and enjoy!
